We'll see how the EV experiment goes Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Fri, 17 May 2019 06:33:51 In Reply to: Re: Ditto: No interest in EVs here OK, neil dale [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 16 May 2019 22:45:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you are right, then perhaps I'll buy one in 10-12 years. I do think we will eventually all be driving EVs - maybe not me, but my kids will. The early hybrids seem to lose their value quickly (which ironically might lead me to buy one sooner rather than later). I am definitely going to wait this one out.
My general rule for automobiles is never to spend more than $7,500 to acquire one and aim for a $0.05/mile lifecycle cost (neglecting the cost of gasoline). I am quite aware that I can only really achieve this because I do all of my own auto repairs.
Lots of great bargains in the used market even on luxury vehicles. My last purchase was for my daughter (last year): a 2006 BMW X3 in near perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition with 86,000 miles on it for $7000. In the past year, the only thing it has needed was a new radiator overflow bottle (which was an unbelievable PITA to replace - thus, the reason I hate that car).
Ironically, my 1988 Saab 900 turbo vert is the only exception to the 0.05 rule, because I really don't care what anything for it costs (performance upgrades, $350 Nardi steering wheel, a $900 Quaife LSD that I haven't even installed, $1500 in specialized transmission tools so that I can rebuild one of the two extras I have in my parts shack). OCD doesn't count.
