Can’t go wrong with the new Corolla. It looks a bit bigger that the previous one. The only complaint I have with my 96 Corolla are the seats. Keep in mind that Toyota does not make comfortable seats. Aftermarket seats are easily available though.
I would also suggest taking a look at the new Altima. Fairly reliable (Edmunds has had a few problems with their long-term SE) and it’s VERY roomy and comfortable, but it has a very low-rent interior. Also watch for the Mazda6 due out in December. I have seen great reviews for that car. The Mazda Protégé is also a great alternative - VERY reliable but small.
Keep your Dad in something Japanese. If he is used to the reliability, it will be hard for him to change. I would hesitate recommending a VW. I think the long-term reliability is a bit spotty.
Good luck!
Craig
