If you want safety and comfort along with nimble handling either the 9-5 or the new 9-3 would be a great choice. The 9-3 being more nimble and the 9-5 being more comfortable. I cannot answer to the reliablity of the newer Saabs since they haven't been around long enough to build a track record. The older Saabs, I've had plenty, will easily go over 200K if maintained properly and sometimes even when they're not. I personally despise Japanese cars, but they "can" be reliable. Just like any other car, they just might not be also.
Corrola - I agree with the others here. It's kind of a low end small car. If I were him, I'd want to move on to something a little nicer.
Maxima - Lots of power, but the car doesn't deal with it well. I rented one with the 250Hp engine after my 9-5 was totaled last year. I hated it. Far too much rear end sway. This car was scary at speed. I couldn't wait to get my replacement 9-5.
Accord - My friend has a 2002. He's tall and hates it. There's no room in front, much less the back. Every time he rides in my 9-5 he about comes to tears. He says "Damn, I should've gotten one of these".
Passat - I like VWs, they perform well, but don't drive one. The small things always seem to break. They become pain in later years. My mother loved VWs, but is just about to purchase her first Saab, a 2003 9-3 Convertable.
The Saab motto holds true....
Most people who test drive a Saab buy one.
Have him go drive the 9-5 and 9-3. He'll be able to decide for himself.
