IIRC (I used to own a 2000 Jetta TDi), the timing belt must be changed at 90K kms for manual, 60K for automatic (automatic runs with a higher belt tension so they wear out faster). Not too difficult to change in theory, you'll likely (some of the tensioners use a hex key) need to buy a special tool (others use a tool with two 3mm pins spaced 20mm apart) or make one to adjust the belt tension into the nominal range. If you have your friendly VW dealer do it, it ain't cheap- I got a quote of approx $1200 Canadian for the job. Otherwise a pretty low maintenace car, good on fuel and better pickup than the base 2.0. People tend to hold on to these cars so finding a used one might be difficult as someone else noted.
Happy shopping!
