You can knock any diesel a couple of ways. They all stink. A friend of mine couldn't park his in his garage as it was off the kitchen and the breeze blew the wonderful diesel odor through the house. Current diesels are not very enviromental friendly. Diesel soot and smoke is still an issue, but they're alot better lately. Same with the noise, still noisey by comparison, but alot better.
And I've always maintained (pun intended) that diesels require MORE routine maintenance. You must change the oil twice as often and modern gas cars don't require tune ups anyway. And when a diesel fuel system fails it's a 5,000 psi pump or part, not a low pressure gas fuel injection part.
In the States there's no advantage to the price of diesel fuel and it's still can be tricky to find.
But I've driven a TDI and it's a very decent car. Diesel owners are closet car lovers/enthusiasts IMHO.
