MY father owns a 2001 TDI jetta and loves it. He can get close to 800 miles per tank. It is not smokey, it does not smell except when first started, there is minimal noise over a gasser. He has had a few minor problems (mostly electrical, like the alarm) but overall it has been a good car, and you can't beat 50mpg.
Check out tdiclub.com there is lots of great information on there.
When I go from my 90 900T to his TDI the most noticable difference is the power. His is smoother, but mine is much faster off the line. I also notice that I shift more in his TDI, 55 mph is great in 5th but if you drop down a little you have to hit 4th. With my 900 I can work 5th from about 35mph on up. I guess you can easily chip them (upsolute is one manufactuer) and it will give wheelspin and more power without a loss in MPG.
Good luck
