Nothing offensive, I just got back from driving my dads TDI. I love the car! I did mention longer engine life of a diesel as well. I'd argue that point to my grave. Anyone who thinks that they can get the utility (torque, etc) power and long engine life from a gasser has no idea what they are talking about. If a gasser was a longer lasting motor I bet truckers would all be driving gas engines. I agree, the smell of diesel lasts longer. 20K is not ok for an oil change interval IMO, which is why I stated that it is perfectly normal for 10K changes. 10k seems to be the norm for most diesel engines, not just cars. Our trucks and busses for work are all changed at 10-15k intervals.
I don't know where you get your figure for milage. I get an average of 25 (up to 30 if all interstate), the diesel gets 43-49 all the time (we don't do much city driving, but some stop and go). If 49 is not close to 2x25 then I stand corrected. Jump behind a TDI after a fill up on an interstate, I bet you have to fill up first.
I meant no harm by my statements, I just thought that readers should know some of the positives of diesels, IMHO they are a better all around car. They arn't better at everything, but I think they are a better purchase for your dollar. My friend has a 1981 Diesel rabbit for instance. After 340K the tranny went. 400 bucks later it was back on the road. Still runs as well as the day it was new. His father had a 6.2L Suburban which he sold at 460K and he has a 84 Benz with well over 300K.
