Re: they all stink.... no, they do smell, but no more than sniffing the pipe of a gasser, its just a different smell.
Re: current Diesels are not enviro. friendly... Well, if you consider that you get twice the MPG, and that they won't ruin the OZONE LAYER like a gasser than I guess yeah, they are killing baby seals every day, but really it is better for the enviroment than a gasser.
re: Diesel soot and smoke is an issue - ever driven behind a TDI? You won't know its anything different than a 2.0 jetta or such. The only time I have seen soot from one is during a burnout with a chipped TDI, and when my dad got stuck in the driveway and black on snow shows up pretty well.
re: more maintenance... well if you run synthetic you can go easily 10,000 miles between oil changes, and thats with a turbo. Yes the timing belt needs to be replaced, but guess what, when you are done paying for the car its not dead. Expect 300K out of a TDI motor easily. BTW, what do you tune up on a TDI? NOTHING!
Re: fuel prices... Diesel is about the same as premuim here in the northeast, but my 900T gets 25mpg and my dads tdi gets 50. You do the math. Have you been on ANY Remotly major road in the US? Almost every gas station has a fuel pump. EVERYWHERE!
Hope this helps with your misdirected information.
