the VW TDI should not smoke. it may smell, but they run extremly lean to combat smoke. The argument that diesel is hard to find, is B.S. nothing more. Besides, you only need it every two months or more, something like 6-800 miles. These engines are extremely simple, and therefor bomb-proof. However, routine maintinance like timing chains are required since it's imposible to have a non-interferance diesel. (ie: timing chain snaps = valve through a piston)
