When will we Americans realize that the diesels here are truly pathetic compared to the common rail diesels sold in Europe. After living in Germany for 2 years, driving VW TDIs, and diesel-powered Renaults, and living with neighbors that have diesel powered cars, I would like to inform folks here that there are diesels that do not stink, are not noisy, and are easy to maintain. They are clean and fuel efficient. You don't have to wait on glow plugs, etc. Our diesel fuel is "dirty", (eg. high in sulfur), compared to the better, cleaner diesel fuel found in Western Europe. Our diesel fuel would clog the injectors, filters on the European cars. The diesels I drove reminded me of driving a car with an American V8. Plenty of torque, but without the fuel consumption. They are truly amazing. And they will run. I've driven with several VW and Audi TDI powered cars at 140+ MPH on the autobahn. Efficient, clean running and powerful diesels exist, but not in the US (Our TDI VW motor is not the same as theirs). BTW, anyone interested can look at the 23 Dec 02 Autoweek for a good article on this subject.
