I have a neighbor who is a transmission technician for GM Powertrain. He rebuilds transmissions out of his garage for extra money, and flat told me that he won't go near Saab tranny due to an earlier experience with a 90 vintage C-900. Said he rebuilt if 3 times and finally gave the guy his money back.

He said the cases could go bad due to a difference in expansion rates between the aluminum case and steel sleeve. At any rate, it leave me thinking that there could be more to your problem than you're hearing.

I honestly can't believer the service tech mistook a trans drain plug for the engine oil drain plug. And, I think you'd be having some serious engine problems after adding 4.5 quarts of additional oil to your crankcase. You'd have noticed blue smoke unless that's normal for your car.

I think your Saab mechanic is covering his butt. He may have forgotten to add trans fluid himself, or it could have leaked out. If it was an automatic, even though the fluid doesn't drain from the converter, you'd still be 4-5 quarts low. Your car probably wouldn't move being that low on fluid. And if it did, it would be missing shift points.

At any rate, he needs to come up with a better explanation than he's given. You're getting a load of BS.
