put in some difficult hours and work for pay that 10 years ago would have seemed a little low. And you should stive toward having a clear picture of what you want to do; never say that you want to do a job in an interview just to get you considered. It doesn't work that way. People can tell that you're just saying it. They won't think you're a bad person or anything, they'll probably even sympathize a bit, but they will not give you the job. It's hard at any age but try to get specific on what you'd like to be doing. Why did you go to school at Duke and major in Econ/Psych in the first place? Make these questions clear for yourself and then present that clarity to companies that fit. In other words, start with You. Graciousness and clear thinking will go a long way in getting you hired. And, as I first wrote, you also need the honesty of a commited work ethic, especially as a new grad--No late shows. No early walks. No particularly expensive clothes, or car. But taking the hit now means that you gain the experience and the molded attitude necessary to move to a different place at a probably significant pay increase in a couple of years. (Econ majors tend to do well in pay, btw, over the course of their working years, though they do not always start high) There are currently few places hiring in seemingly every field, but your major and your school are very solid, even ideal. You will most likely find some kind of at least somewhat meaningful work at sometime during the next 8 months, just get clear on what you want as well. And don't just 'Go to grad school'. That's the worst advice anyone can give you. Grad school--most professional programs especially--is for people who have already worked at least a couple of years. 25 year old attorneys and MBAs are the least likely to get jobs in murky economy.
(I went to grad school in Econ at UMichigan. I've worked in venture capital for the same Japanese-owned firm for almost four years since completing grad school at age 27. I've recently been promoted to the Director of Operations and, as such, oversee certain hiring here, though tend to leave it to people who enjoy the interviewing process. We only need about 30 employees so we are not planning any new hires until someone leaves.)
