Try some of the pension fund advisory firms, they do a lot of analytical work and yield analysis that should fit well with an Econ degree. They tend to have need in their research departments. My area is real estate advisory services and there is a big push in the PF industry to increase investment in real estate due to the low interest rates on fixed income instruments and a punk stock market, so there might be hiring in that sector.
I suggest checking the websites for the industry standardization organizations such as AIMR, NAREIT and NCREIF to get the industry background and terminology down for an interview. Publications such as IREM or Crittendons will get you lists of the funds, their consultants, and the advisors that the consultants recommend to the funds. Investigate them via the web. Check with the big real estate brokerage firms like Cushman and Wakefield, CB Richard Ellis, etc and major lenders. Its a big industry and tends to be located in major cities such as Boston, NY and SF, but boutique firms are all over. Discounted cash flow analysis and database management skills would be valuable to such employers.
Also try the reference book Directory of Executive Recruiters by Kennedy Publishing in New Hampshire, you can get it direct from them or through Amazon, about $45. That gives you recruiter's names and their specialization in a particular industry. This will let you do a mass mailing of your vitea.
Have a good cover letter, a good resume, proofread critically by someone in the hiring business. And get a good suit with dress shoes, white shirt and a decent tie from Nordstroms, take nothing for granted. I'm always amazed when I have to interview someone that looks good on paper but shows up looking like he takes fashion advice from Limp Bizket's lead singer. Lose the piercings and cover any tatoos, at least for this industry.
Oh, and be prepared to do this several times in your career as mergers, spin offs, changes in management or changes in company fortune beyond your control (CEO doing the perp walk on TV?; not good for your career either) may have you looking again. Remember, nothing good ever follows the words "New Corporate Initiative", keep your resume updated through last Thursday. Think for yourself and maintain a positive air in all circumstances; nobody hires anyone with negative energy. And luck is the residue of design, if you don't ask, you don't get.
