The only thing I've noticed about using the Weber in the winter is that you can't get it quite as hot as you can in the summer, but otherwise- no problem.
The only thing I wish the performer had was an adjustable grill height. I work around this fact by creating a 2 level fire- I arrange the charcoal so there's a hot area and a cooler area. You can sear on the hot area and then move to the cooler area to finish.
Consider also that you can use the baskets included to slow roast- or bake things. When the baskets are filled and pushed to the side it acts much like a convection oven. I've even baked a Mac and Cheese on it one day during the winter when the power failed.
"regular" charcoal, at least around these parts is sold as "lump charcoal" the briquettes are pressed into their square shape and are much denser than lump charcoal. Lump charcoal looks just like the coals you'd get from a campfire. It doesn't last as long, but it burns hotter so its great for things like burgers and steaks. For roasts etc I always use briquettes as they burn a bit more consistently and over a longer period of time. Kingsford Briquettes are the best briquette. I've had good luck with "Royal Oak" brand lump charcoal although brand doesn't seem to be quite as important when you're dealing with lump charcoal.
All this BBQ talk is makin' me hungry...
