I've got an inexpensive gas grill made of some sort of alloy - pot metal or aluminum type of stuff. No trouble. No rust. The only thing I do different than my parents or friends is that I use it in the winter. I cook on it at least every week, sometimes twice a week, no matter what the temperature. When it's real cold, the pieze starter doesn't work because it's frozen in place, so I drop a match in it to light it. Other people put their grill away wet and hope it'll serve them in the spring. I think this is probably the worst things that can be done with them. This past winter it has been well below zero fahrenheit and I've been out there flipping things on the grille. Snowbanks as high as the grill, and the wheels had been completely buried in thick ice. Things are thawed now. The only conditions I did not use it in was when it was extremely windy.
Part of the reason is broiling things in the oven is a sure way to set off my smoke detector. New detectors are amazingly sensitive and noisy and obnoxious, but they do serve a good purpose.
I won't argue the charcoal/gas thing. I'm impatient and like to be cooking ASAP. I'm not likely to complain about cooking processes when eating supper in the dark at 8:30pm.
