the 9-5, although a timeless style, doesnt have the style people want. too many reliability issues, too much bland styling. the accord and camry are bland in styling, but they have japanese reliability and reputations. the saab costs more than an lexus es330... how many people will pay 40,000+ for a saab with terrible reliability and bland styling when they can get a loaded 325i (yes loaded), rx330, es330, a4, passat, s60, etc etc. mid level luxury is too competitive for the 9-5. update it now or drop it all together.. GM is obviously losing a ton of money on this car.. why continue to produce? toyota loses money on the prius but the recognition they get and the publicity makes up for a lot of that.. and they are venturing forward in technology.
the product life cycle shows that the prius should lose money early on, then in the mid/early stage they hybrids will rake in a TON of money, with profits dwindling later on until refreshments are made. the 9-5 never got the mid cycle boost. infact, has it EVER been profitable? why on earth would they sell a car for 7 or 8 years that has never turned a a report in the black its entire life? either pump more money and make it sell for profit, or accept the cunk costs. continuing to produce and sell for a loss with no gain in publicity or anything at all is jsut plain stupid from a corporate standpoint. its no wonder GM has so much financial trouble.
the s2000 sales are slumping, so Honda is nixing it. the eagle talon was losing sales to the eclipse sister, so they cut the project (and the brand). Gm need to get some new management that knows when its time to drop the line all together.
Their mismanagement sure hasnt helped me find a buyer for my 1999 9-5 :)
