Thoughts on 39 mpg from a Paris café

I'm sitting here in Paris, watching the traffic on Boulevard Haussmann stream by, an endless line of Smarts, Peugeots, Bimmers, Benzs, VWs, Audis, Citroens, etc. They range from the tiny to large but the average car is roughly Jetta-sized. The majority seem to have diesel engines.
I don't have a way to easily know, but I'm pretty sure the average mileage here in Paris is a whole lot better than in city traffic in the US and people certainly have no trouble getting around. The same out on the autoroutes where people are running 130-140 kph in their 4 and 6 cylinder diesels.
The people who are whining about how terrible it will be having cars that get 39 MPG need to cross the pond and see how the world works without 5500 pound SUVs and big V8s. Every time I come over I'm reminded how different the Euro vs US approach to automobiles is, and how much better the European model really is. There are a lot of cars here that would make great sense in the US.
