"But given your apparent dislike of automobiles, I'm surprised you don't own something like a Smart or Prius to further minimize your impact on the planet."
1. I do not dislike automobiles (not sure why you got the opposite impression). I very much would like to have a fancy car, if it were given to me for free . . . however, it just doesn't make any financial sense to me, so I get along with what I have.
2. What's there to be surprised about not getting Smart or Prius? The highways near me routinely have average vehicle speed in excess of 80mph. It's suicidal to drive a Smart. Even Prius is only borderly safe with its low-traction tires at these speeds.
"As for your SUV, I respectively submit that there are very few situations when a Saab with 4 winter tires is at any disadvantage over an SUV. Wherever do you live where your wife has to shovel snow out of the middle of the road? Or maybe your town just doesn't plow roads very well"
Like I said before, the 9-5 wagon didn't have enough ground clearance to get through the snow where I used to live. The town did not plow roads very well. In fact, it did not even start ploughing the road where we lived until snow storms had ended. We lived up a hill. It's not a unique phenomenom here in hilly New England.
IMHO, wannabe statists often suffer from a case of lacking imagination. That's why they are constantly "surprised." They always think their way of life is THE WAY. The funny thing is that other people live different lives. Live and let live, that's what I propose.
