I agree that the Europeans have a much more efficient fleet of cars available to them, but this has been pushed on the consumer by high fuel prices and taxes. Americans have always been spoiled by cheap fuel, but I honestly think we should consider diesel as a more common fuel, just like Europe does. The Jetta TDI, BMW 335d, and E320 Bluetec are examples of squeaky clean diesel, on par with their unleaded counterparts, with 30 percent and higher mileage and lower C02 emissions. I recently drove a Jetta TDI with stick and with DSG, and that engine is fantastic! I would buy it over the 2.5 liter 5 cylinder, no question. My European trips had me behind the wheel of Peugeot 407 diesel, Vauxhall Meriva 1.7CDTi, Honda Accord (Acura TSX) 2.2 diesel and a few others, all of which have great torque around town and 40+ MPG. Sure, it's not V8 torque from a start, but let's face it, these smaller efficient engines are the way of the future for the US.
Diesel needs a serious PR campaign..not sure who is the best company to do it....GM didn't do diesel much justice back in the 80's.
