Paris is wonderful and seductive but, with lots of experience living in and traveling to Europe, I really don't know 'how much better the European model really is.'
From your sidewalk cafe I assume you're not paying $7 for a gallon of gas, or over 20% VAT on your new car purchase (try Denmark for truly extortionate prices on new cars!), extremely high tolls on the autoroutes, absurd prices for parts and service, etc.
I just spent a week in Paris and a week in Munich in April (BTW, saw only a few Saabs in either location). Public transportation is excellent and most people use that to get around because the cost of car ownership is prohibitive and beyond the reach of many people.
Now, if you want to discuss the coolness of various Euro-model cars, that's another story.
