and not only did I not see ONE SAAB, I was fascinated by the "shortage" of European cars. In the beautiful South (SE Texas (Houston is huge!), Arkansas, Louisana, Mississippi, Tennesse) there was an abundance of American iron, SUV's, and Japanese cars. I saw one Porsche and a couple of BMW's. Oh yeah, I forgot about the Smart. I loved driving the SUV's (GMC Yukon, Chevy Blazer) and raiding Walmart (heh heh). The Yukon got suprisingly good highway mileage, but was downright awful around town. I much preferred it to my sister's Mercedes E320 but man, I really missed driving my 9k Aero. You're right, I think most people in the big cities drive diesels but I'm really concerned about the dangerous ultra fine soot they emit. The Euro model which you refer to can be decieving. I don't think the American model is all that bad considering the distances (just needs to trim some SUV's). The Euros depend heavily on public transportation which is very poor in the States. City buses probably use LPG which is a much more "greener" fuel.
