Most people are not given a car for free. They have to pay for it. If I were given a choice of a free Escalade vs. a free pint sized car that can be sold for just as much money, I'd take the smaller car because it would cost less money to turn around and sell the car . . . then go buy something that I really want. That's probably what most people would do if you give them a choice of $45k cars for free.

Your whole theory about people always wanting bigger cars is completely invalide on two accounts:

1. When gasoline price zoomed in 2007, people bailed out of big vehicles in droves. Toyota Prius, and even used Suzukis/Geo Metro prices were bid sky high. People do care about operating cost.

2. E-150 Vans cost about $25k; they are far bigger than most $30k SUV's or luxury sedans. People are not buying those vans in droves.

"You see it everyday on the road, one person behind the wheel of the 'family' vehicle quad cab truck, SUV, cross over, or similar, really being used as a daily driver."

most of the time you see a police vehicle, it's not chasing anyone or carrying any suspect; in fact, it's parked most of the time! So why aren't all police riding bicycles? In fact, if I were to set a camera monitoring you 24/7, chances are that 90% of the time you do not even use your car. So why do you own a car at all? It's the 0.1-10% use that decides vehicle purchases. To the third-party casual observer, the overwhelming majority of the time the vehicle is not being used to its maximum capacity.

"Next time you are at a stop light count the truck/suv/cross over group vs the car/wagon/small van group. The numbers are vastly different than 5, 10, and 15 years ago."

In case you didn't notice, until a year or so ago, the economy improved significantly over the previous 10, 15 years.

"I am going to purchase a tow vehicle when I find the right one, used, and will use it to tow the race car and nothing else."

Why am I not surprised. Hypocracy knows no bounds. Here we have someone guzzling gas at 5-10mpg going around in circles in the name of fun (nothing wrong with that per se) accusing others of being prodigal in their personal pursuits.

"Otherwise I don't have anything larger than a four door sedan or hatchback. Ok, I have several of them... ha ha ha. What do you have in your stable?"

We have two eminently practical midsize vehicles. One being a Saab wagon, the other a midsize SUV for the winter. We do not race or joyride. Sure, I'd love to have a convertible if it were free, but practicality wins the day. I certainly do not want some weekend racer to tell me why choosing to live a lifestyle that puts only 5000 miles a year on each of our cars is a sin.
