I mostly agreed with your first post replying to the original poster; namely, for two vehiles of similar interior volume, building it as a "truck" brings greater profit margin because under the current CAFE rule, the vehicle then can avoid fines.
The post I took exception to was the reply you made above to my post, on two specific points:
1. What people would like if vehicles were free is entirely different from what people actually buy in real life with their own money. None of the top selling midsize family cars would make it to the top if people were getting cars of their desire with no monetary constraint. Not even F-150 would make it; huge luxury SUV's would be more desirable even for the F-150 crowd, just like most people being constrained by money into buying an Accord or Camry can certainly appreciate being given an RL or LS for free, assuming they do not aspire to Limo's. Removing the real life monetary constrait, giving public money to bureaucrats to spend in their jobs telling other people what to do would actually remove the cost restraint as the bureaucrats would indeed spend other people's money and get huge black SUV's for themselves.
2. An instantaneous survey on SUV's on the road, mostly occupied by only the driver is no indication of whether the owners need the SUV at all. An instantaneous survey on all police cruisers would show that the overwhelming majority of police cruisers only have one occupant. You are just not present to witness the 0.1-10% of the time the vehicle's extra capacities are well utilized.
As for racing, between the time when the car's pedal is put to the metal and the idling between runs, I'd be quite surprised if you get better than 10mpg for the time after you arrive at the track and before you leave.
