Had it not been for the brilliant work of US Nobel Prizewinner Mario Molina and his capable team, we would not have switched out the chloroflurocarbon refrigerants which chewed big holes at the poles.

CFCs are still in use and there was a healthy illegal trade in this dangerous industrial chemical; mostly to third world nations with old fridges.

This was accomplished in record speed at the international level by the Montreal Protocol. It has nothing to do with climate change as you suspected.

A bad scare occured a few months ago over Puntas Arenas, Chile. There, the satellites showed for a brief period that that southernmost city in South America would have practically NO ozone laye protection. Fortunately, the hole closed over and the place was taken out of danger. Eventually, the 'sting' you are experienceing will go away, maybe not in my lifetime, but we're on the right course and as I recall, the layer is restoring itself faster than the scientists thought it would.

There is another, "bad" kind of ozone. This is ozone in the troposheric and lower levels which causes all kinds of health problems. Up to 38% of it comes from biomass burning like your bush fires.
