about 65 million years ago. The crater is massive but is almost entirely under the ocean. Took them until recently to find it. The northern coastline of the Yucatan penninsula represents the southern edge of the crater. The debris thrown up from the collision was tremendous, ended up high in the atmosphere and circled the globe, reducing sunlight penetration. It is also blamed now for the extinction of the dinosaurs. More interesting stuff - A thin layer of iridium-rich sediment was found worldwide at a layer corresponding to the dating of this event. Iridium is apparently much more plentiful in meteors than on the earth.
These meteorite collisions can do remarkable damage. I was just looking at National Geographic's map of mars, and the southern hemisphere contains a crater which is 5 miles deep. It is thought that a meteorite 100 miles wide collided there and spread a layer of debris one mile thick over an area the size of the united states. Our Yucatan meteorite was not nearly that big, however.
