Read an interesting postulate this morning. Basically, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is constant (give or take some weather/earthquake effects & the like). Way back when, plants converted CO2 to carbon (retained in the plant) and O2 (released to atmosphere). Burn the plant (or allow it to decay) and CO2 is created to go back to the atmosphere. But some plants, and animals feeding on that, were converted to coal or oil many eons ago, effectively trapping the carbon under the surface - it did not get converted back to CO2 in a short time cycle. So now we burn coal and oil and put CO2 back into the atmosphere. Point is - are we increasing the aboslute level of CO2 or just replenisihing the CO2 level which ahs been below "normal" for a few eons, waiting for us to burn the trapped carbon?
I don't claim credit for the idea and have not seen it in a scientific discussion report. It does make an interesting hypothesis.
That then says global warming is not due to CO2 increasing (since CO2 is held constant by the hypothesis), but does not eliminate other causes such as nitrous oxides, particulate emissions (including those from volcanoes) and so on.
