All those early turn of the century GM cars have appalling safety records - although reliable, I wouldn't personally put someone I love in one.

Two cars I would probably look at would be an early Y2K Mercedes C-class or a mid '00s Volvo S40/V50. I'd also probably look at a Honda Fit. If she can drive a manual, you are also probably really close to a lightly used Ford Fiesta - they were selling steeply discounted ones in '12 for $12k - they can't be more than $8k or $9k now, and you get a very recent car out of the deal.
