Thanks everyone for your input - lots of good insight. The IIHS study was interesting - they do not recommend any "small" cars yet recommend small SUV's. They also recommend full size minivans and pretty large SUV's. Plenty of small cars like Civics, Mazda 3's etc with 5 star ratings all around. I understand the logic of avoiding a "mini" cars like a Honda Fit or Mazda 2 but Am I going to get a hulking Mazda CX-9 for a 4'9'' daughter - nope. Looks like I was spot on with considering a Saab 9-3 but cost of ownership is something I need to consider (as with any European car). Luckily I do have Tibor (I am in NJ)close by to take care of it (like he did for my 9-5). Of course I could give her my 09 Mazda 6 and get a Miata for myself since I now work from home and don't have to commute!
