I can't say enough about this car. It's smaller (almost subcompact), smooth, quiet and reliable. You should be able to find a peach for under $10,000. Start looking now for a low owner count car that was kept stock (these cars are popular with kids) and had the timing belt replaced around 90,000 miles. Other than that, you can use conventional 5W-30 oil, drain the transmission fluid from a pan plug, tires are not expensive, and the inline six engine is considered bulletproof.

Like others have already said, stay far away from European makes. Yes, they have more soul and are pleasant to drive but those qualities are more noticeable to older folks like us who can distinguish them. The euros will break more often and will be more expensive to fix. Jettas have a sealed for life transmission - do you get my drift?
