A friend of mine had a y2k era merc coupe. Very nice little car, with a lot in common with the og9-3. Not sure about reliability though as Merc went through some down years around then.

Volvo S40/V50 always appealed to me back then, but they weren't as safe as the NG9-3 and probably not built quite as well as the other volvos. Still, not a bad choice for a young driver. That 9-3ss really was ahead of the game at the time wrt safety. It was the first car ever to get the iihs double best pick (nobody else, Volvo included, could manage the SUV T-bone test well enough to get 5 stars on it).

I also agree re the GM cars of that era... if I was going to hit a moose, I'd sure as heck rather be in a SAAB or Volvo. (I've seen lots of moose photos of that era GM cars with a giant hole right through them... but of course they fail in many other ways also!)
