Did you add the oil over that 3,000 miles of driving or all at once? I'm wondering if it will remain stable now that you've added the oil- i.e. it was just extremely low when you bought the car (same for the coolant). If the oil is needed on an ongoing basis then it's going somewhere, either leaking or burning. Do you see evidence of oil leaking where you park on a regular basis? If not, then do you see white smoke (coolant, but not to be confused with the white smoke you will see on cold winter mornings) or blue smoke (burning oil) coming out of the tail pipe while driving? The engine is a GM Ecotec design with Saab-specific hardware and electronics. The block is used by Saturn. It has nothing in common with the 2.3L Saab engine in the 9-5, and that's the one which had PCV fixes/updates. Yeah, that's a drastic suggestion from the dealer tech, sounds like they are stringing you along- 3 hours labor already. Not surprising though- I once had a dealer service manager suggest that the 5.7L engine in my (at the time) several year old Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 had seized, when in fact the car just had a dead battery. My current car, a 2003 9-3 Arc 6 speed was leased new by me and only has 16,900 miles on it. I'm now in a lease extension period and I'm deciding whether or not to purchase the car. I've only ever needed to add a tiny amount of oil twice to top it off.
