I find it hard to beleive that the previouis owner wasnt complaining. There are 2 reasons to use oil, rings (which I doubt at this mileage) and the PCV valve in the intake manifold. The only way to know for sure it to replace the valve. However they were scarce at one time and required updating to the entire system (Valve cover and intake manifold from a biopower engine).I would try to replace just the valve if possible.
The engines are built in Europe by GME they are all technically Opel engines. However Saturn and Chevrolet both use our (opel) motor for their Redline/performance engines. (good luck getting them to admit that) Additionally if your were to look in the GM performance catalog they make everything to put together a 1400 HP engine using our head and block as a base. They specifically call out the saab motor to use as the head and block are both better than the standard GM fair. They even compare our rods as an upgrade like the old chevy "pink" rods. Every sport compact drag racer at the upper level is using our SAAB/OPEL block.
The long and short is have them check the PCV valve. The coolant consuption however is a totally different fish, these blocks will ocasionally seep coolant throught the block itself and the only repair for this is a new motor. First you must determine if its actually loosing coolant or just needed topping up. These engines are extremely durable so lohgevity will not be an issue.
