C900 guy thinking about a 9-5

Greetings:
I've had 8 or 9 C900s over the years and I think it's getting to be about time to step into the modern generation. I drove a friend's '01 Viggen 'vert (that he bought on my recommendation) for a few days and was pleased with the vehicle.
I don't fit in a 9-3 so I'll be looking at a used 9-5. Finances will allow something around $10,000. So, a bunch of questions:
- I'm in Massachusetts and winters absolutely kill C900s. Do the new models tolerate winters better or should I shop for something in another region of the country?
- I've always had manual transmission and will continue to do so unless someone reeeeeeally convince me otherwise. I'll try to drive both to see.
- The C900 was well known for its bulletproof engine. I got 300k out of one and 200k is a snap. Any word on longevity with the 9-5?
I welcome any and all thoughts/comments -- what to look for, what to lookout for, certain years to avoid (I've only heard about oil sludge, don't know anything about it), etc.
Many thanks,
Doug
