We have owned a 2000 9-5 (since sold to our son (90,000 miles)) and a 2004 9-5 Aero(39,000 miles). The 2004 9-5 has a 5 speed automatic transmission which is truly a great transmission (with paddle shifters for its manual mode)in terms of both performance and durability (based upon postings to this board. Before settling on a manual trans, I would test drive a 9-5 with the automatic trans. The 2004 also has stability control which will keep you out of trouble in snowy/icy winter conditions. Also, using four snow tires and with the traction control our 9-5s have been just about unstoppable in getting through any snow conditions. The engines on the
9-5s can be vulnerable to sludge if you do not use synthetic (Mobil-1 0W40 is recommended), and if you do not do oil changes at 5,000 miles or less; however with that said 200,000 to 300,000 miles is achievable as far as engine life goes. The 2004 and later models have a modified PCV system which will also help prevent sludge formation. For earlier models, check on whether the car has had PCV fix #6 (do a search on this for what it would look like in the engine compartment).

As far as what can go wrong, SID display failure (more so on the pre 2004 models); throttle body failures (occurred on our 2004 at 37,000 miles; a $200 DIY fix for a remanufactured TB); heater control valve failure ($80 DIY fix); driver's seat sub frame developed excessive play; Direct Ignition Cassette failure (more so on the pre 2004 models).

Overall, despite the aforementioned laundry list of things to look out for, our ownership experience with both the 2000 and 2004 9-5s have been very enjoyable and the cars do make driving a special experience.
