I needed a new engine for my wife's 9-5 linear a few years back and found that it can be quite a racket (engine sales)- a big advertised place in WI offered really good prices, guarantee, and free shipping. Since it's not to far away and I have a truck I called them to see if I could pick it up (also so I could inspect) and the response I got was "Oh no sir, we don't do that- that's why the shipping is free!" I ended up buying a used low mile engine out of a Florida yard and though the shipping was not cheap it was in excellent condition and well stored/packaged. 40,000 miles on it now.
Good luck, sounds like you can salvage what you have at least with parts from the old. I kept the head, and other valuable parts from my wife's 2.3L- you never know. Plan on keeping our 2002 wagon as long as possible. Saabs really are beautiful machines
