Well, the shop did find the time at the end of that week. Car is running fine again. I didn't get to post this earlier, I kept running into problems with saabnet dot com refusing my posts, and then I moved house.

What the shop found was that the timing chain sprockets had moved. 8-O

Supposedly there's a key, a keyseat and -way on the sprockets and timing shafts. The key was gone, and the sprockets were damaged I guess, because the shop changed both, with parts from a donor.

They started out by checking spark and fuel, both were fine but I don't know how they tested this. They changed the T7 motor management ecu (the one against the firewall) and then checked compression. Come to think of it I don't know how this indicated the timing was off, but they removed the valve cover and that's when they found the problem.

The shop owner told me the engine would feel off in the beginning and I needed to drive 20-30 minutes so the hydraulic tappets could fill up again. The engine was very lumpy at idle and had less power. After 20 minutes all was back to normal, exactly like the man said. All in all very good service from

I can't understand how I skirted serious engine damage but there you have it. I wonder how it holds up the coming days.

Cheers,
Ferenc

P.S. A month later, the engine wise it holds up very well. Now to sort that pesky 3-way valve problem...
