I would still replace the fuel filter if it is super old, especially if it has 200k miles on it. That's just basic maintenance. Dmz and your mechanic are right that you would expect performance issues first, but it can also make a car harder to start if it is really clogged. Sometimes it is the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Another thought was to try starting it in neutral... But I guess you said it was cranking, so probably not the NSS.
Hope it works out. Will be interesting to hear what the mechanic finds out looking at it.
