Hi there my fellow enthusiasts!
Let me see how quickly I can get to the point here....I'm restoring a 1988 Edwardian grey vert. I'm an autobody tech with over thirty years experience, but not really a mechanic. I only do mechanic work on my own stuff when I can take as much time as I like. I'm pretty decent at it, but it is not my profession. That being said, I decided to pull the motor and tranny and have them both rebuilt during the process by a Saab mechanic. All the motor and tranny stuff is now pretty,(I handled making it pretty after it came back from the mechanic) rebuilt and back where it belongs. I'm German, so my nature is to be anal about the details. Suffice to say, all things are plugged in, bolted in, and in exactly the way they were before removal. Hundreds of pictures and notes helped me accomplish this.
The motor did run good before removal, it was the tranny that was bad so I did the whole "motor tranny thing" while it was all out. It took about a year as this is my "restoration project" with no time constraints. The car was sometimes outside, (on pavement with a waterproof cover), and sometimes inside.
Well, this past Saturday evening was the big day. After a year of spending lots of money and probably 200 man hours doing all the labor involved, The last few items were put in, (my freshly powdercoated valve cover, my shiny new looking Erikson rebuilt turbo with the shiny red compressor housing, you get the point). I add all fluids, triple check everything top and bottom, (it's on a lift) and hop on the plastic milk krate that is now the driver's seat, (since the interior is out for rug dye and seat stiching). Hit the key and.......She turns over like a charm. I have spark but no gas. I check the fuse for the fuel pump, (#27 I think). It's good. I pour another six gallons of gas in the tank just to be sure that I'm not just sucking wind out of the tank....Still no gas showing up at the party! I remove the banjo bolt on the front end of the fuel rail and crank it over....still no gas.
Why? As I said about a mile back, the motor DID run well before removal. Just sat there and idled smoothly prior me removing it. No wires were cut. All plugs are back in place. I see no evidence anywhere of mice eating the wires or anything like that. I've thumped on the bottom of the tank, just to give it a "wake up call", (This has worked on some of my other 900s when the pump got stubborn). Could the fuel pump relay just have gone bad from sitting for a year? Is there some obvious thing I'm overlooking? Any ideas? I've come toooooo far to let this small problem beat me. Any help from the Saab elders is appreciated. I'm actually counting on you guys. Thanks for reading. Hope to hear some repys. Cheers, Bob T.
