Hey there gentlemen. First, let me reveal that although I've not posted on here before, that I have been lurking in the shadows and viewing this site daily for more than 10 years. Yes, I said daily...as in EVERY day. This is my 3rd 900 vert. It's the first one I've ever gotten this deep into. That being said, I see the names that have responded and I feel fortunate to have your input. Thank you all for your help and kind words. I value the time you've already spent helping somebody you've never met before. I knew I liked this club, even when I was on the outside looking in.... Now, On with the show.....
I had a lunch hour to play detective today and here's what I've found; I jumpered fuse position 27 and 30 and the pump runs. Pressure developed in the rail enough to tell me that I needed to give the front banjo bolt on the front of the fuel rail another quarter turn to keep the fuel from spraying. I went back and re-checked spark. I have it at both the coil and the plug wires. I put the jumper back between 27 and 30, heard the pump run and got in the car. Turned over about 15 times but still no start. I then pulled my daily driver, (a '93 vert.) and matched up my firing order. It's exactly as it's supposed to be. So now, (temporarily ignoring the fact that I'm probably looking at either a bad fuel pump relay or ECU, or fuel system relay) I have to ask myself: I have spark, I have the wires in the proper firing order, and with a jumper I have fuel pressure. The distributor has the vac advance parallel to the ground so I'm close enough, give or take 3 degrees, to start. Why no start now?
To answer another question, I see that a few of you guys are questioning the grounds. Here's what's up. I had a 1991 turbo motor with about 80,000 less miles than the '88 motor so I went with that motor. That explains the cross hatch casting on the head, (man,....you guys don't miss a trick!!!) The grounding leads do indeed ground to the engine pull hook. There are two drilled and tapped holes on it. The "gang ground" on the rad. support bottom right side has all grounds attached there with that kind of star washer that grinds it's way to bare metal as it's tightened. I have a ground strap that runs from my alternator housing to the side of the intake at the throttle bkt. mounting point. I have the intake grounded to the left side inner fender well. I think I got 'em all! Back to the problem:
With all the things I mention above, (spark, ground, fuel pump running with jumper, firing order correct) why still no start? Not even a pop or a fart during turning it over with the jumper running the pump. Where to now?? No time tomorrow to play, but I will replace both relays on Thursday and see if that returns the pump situation to normal, but still....why still no start?? Any and all responses are much appreciated. I'll post 15 second video of it running if I ever get there! Thanks guys....Bob T. (in CT)
