Liber Bob,
as we Germans well know there are no miracles. It either runs or it doesn't, latter being your case, unfortunately.

What does it need to start up?
1. Air. The more the better. And a clean (plug-free) exhaust.
2. Fuel. 1/14.7 (in mass) to air +- 20%
3. Spark, which must happen at a certain crankshaft angle position.
4. Combustion chamber sealance (any holes in piston or valve significantly reduce our chances to fire it up)
5. Minimal start-up crankshaft RPM value depends on engine design, number of cylinders and air temperature
Pretty simple, no rocket science yet.

1. Air. If you've got movable throttle and live - and properly run, see below - AIC valve, then you should be getting the air. Especially if it cranks well.
2. Fuel. Well, it's a tad more tricky. You need to carefully check appropriate voltages at appropriate pins at appropriate connectors since all this runs on electronic engine management system. You better get yourself a good copy of Bentley or factory service manuals (whatever you find more appropriate). Remember the main rule of thumb: always perform voltage checks at the load side (i.e.: not at the source) and under the load! Otherwise you'll eliminate bad grounds, semi-broken wires and short-circuited load from your checks.
3-5. I trust your over thirty years experience so I believe you've got it sorted out already. Just double-check that, especially ignition timing. Btw, how did you check whether you've got the spark? And are the spark plugs any wet after you crank it the next time? Are they oil-wet or Benzin-wet?

Well, if I'm to put it a tad more seriously, then I know it's a pain to troubleshoot this issue (or similar), but there's nothing complex there. Time-consuming? - yes. PITA? - well, maybe. Complex? - absolutely no. Do it step-by-step and mind die Ornung.

Gluck,
Sieg

P.S.
My previous C900 - Aeroflop - gave me a similar issue one day. I finally gave it up and jump-started from another car (he gave me a real push then!) - and it started up! I turned it off, changed nothing (absolutely nothing) and cranked it up - and it started up again. I suspect that Flop just want to trick me... or see another car. He was special.
