1985 SAAB 900 8V Base car (2 dr hatch). Have been trying to figure out why she only starts "at times." I gradually replaced coil TWICE..... the first one became very hot to the touch (????) and this one does not. Replaced distributor cap, rotor; replaced ignition unit (found on driver's side, just outside of engine compartment). The car would run, then stop after 20 or 30 minutes.... after the second coil was installed, ran well, I was shutting her off after 30 minutes of idling done as test. (She was idling very nicely, just purring along, sounded great.) Since start of this summer she will NOT start; turns very quickly but does not catch. I tried to find a spark by disconnecting plug wire and inserting a new plug while grounding base of plug (to negative terminal) and bracing plug wire up in the air so I could see it (I have no helper); no spark seen. Put an in-line spark tester into plug wire then inserted plug, grounded as before; no spark. Tried in-line spark tester inserted into distributor node then connected to spark plug wire with working spark plug; no spark seen. I opened distributor and turned engine and the rotor did turn (distributor cap and rotor were new). I have a very low-end multi-meter and it does show power at the positive side of the coil. Cannot tell if power is coming from coil to the distributor -- don't know how to test. My mechanical skills are not significant but I'd like to keep her on the road; she was always good to me, so I need to care for her now. Any and all help appreciated.
