That cable connects the Hall sensor in the distributor to the wiring harness and ultimately to the ignition module (another part subject to failure). Later models have a crank sensor instead.
I "tested" mine by wiggling the cable near the connector and found that it would affect whether the engine would start, or if running the engine would cut out. If that is the culprit you would probably need to find a good used connector.
Another potential issue is that due to a supplier problem the wiring insulation tends to disintegrate in 1985 Saabs which can make for some interesting, difficult to find problems.
