With regard to the 1985 wiring harness, I had an '85 with the "known" insulation problem. The mechanic I was using at the time solved a no start issue by wiring in a fuel pump switch to start the fuel pump whenever I wished it drive the car. He also wired around some other things as a "solution". This was OK for some time. I followed up after I again lost the ability to start. I had read a report of the wiring insulation problem and decided to open up the harness which runs along the fuel rail. What a rats nest! Lots of bits of insulation and corroded strands of wire. I took an afternoon and replaced all the damaged wires on that part of the harness from the point where the insulation degraded at the firewall forward to where the wire returned to "good" insulation. This resolved all my issues including the fuel pump. At that point the car was at about 250K. I had no further issues with wiring and drove the car to ~ 620K. The point here is that the main insulation issue is in the fuel rail harness; it's fixable in an afternoon. Good luck!
