A couple comments. The 85 8V engine doesn't have a fuel rail harness. It's a very different mechanical fuel injection system. That doesn't avoid the wire insulation deterioration issue. About the distributor wiring: the 3 wires that go from the module to the distributor are contained in a shielded cable from the dizzy to the module. Tough to get to those. I've seen a couple problems with the connection at the dizzy. Where the 3 wires leave the shielded cable right at the plug end. I've seen frayed insulation that could be seen around the cable/ plug area. I've also seen a dealer repair where the plug was replaced with a few inches of solid 3 wires. But this all goes back to diagnosing whether it's fuel or spark.
