That is a very elegant looking solution in that picture. Nice work.
Attached a pic of the inside of the MY 87 valve cover. Please excuse the markings of what appear to be a 3 year old highlighting the areas mentioned in your post. It makes sense that that is why these nodes would be in the position they are in.
I've found a new old stock gasket set online for my car that contains the joints on the spray bars. (It was much easier to source this gasket set 5 years ago!). Will avoid the purchase at the moment. For now I've pushed them back in and they seem solid in their positions.
I'll try and cut down the rubber chain guide that I have and see what I can come up with.
I suppose this problem could also be collapsed lifters. They are original to the motor, that I believe has close to 300k on it.
