Both pads (wide or narrow) are still available from on-line parts suppliers, but be careful about the part numbers they use!
I went through this w/ my '87 turbo when I decided to spiff up my car with a powder-coated valve cover from an (unknown year) donor... As you have discovered, there are 2 different "chain control" pads, a wide one (around 0.9" Saab p/n 8859324, updated to 30518277), and a narrower one (around 0.7"), Saab p/n 7505845. My original Valve Cover (stamped w/ 7523939 on the inside) used the wider pad. My spiffy powder-coated model required the narrower pad, so I was concerned that there might be interior differences that would interfere with or not properly support the spray bars. But when I carefully measured just about every indentation and tab between the two covers, I was unable to find any difference except for the tabs that hold that rubber pad in place. Anyway, I went ahead and used the later model valve cover and it has worked fine, spray bars stay in place.
Aftermarket Saab parts from other manufacturers use their own internal part numbers for those 2 different pads. Scan-tech/ Sweden uses 539324 for the wide pad, and 535845 for the narrow pad.
