Hey Fellow Saabers!

Been a tough couple of weeks for me with broken Saabs. My '71 96 drivers door suddenly refused to open, causing all kinds of fits. Then my '74 Sonett had a front brake bind up. And the latest- my 900 clutch hydraulics gave up the ghost...

I jumped in one day and no clutch. No resistance at all. No puddle of brake fluid under so I figured it was the master cylinder. I ordered one, installed it, and had a heck of a time to get it to bleed. I tried pressure from the top down and that didn't work- my jury rigged cap kept leaking. Then I tried sucking it through from the slave end first with a big syringe and then with a MityVac and that didn't work. Finally, I tried pushing the fluid UP from the slave with the big syringe and used just hand pressure. That worked immediately. Excellent!

I went in the house, washed up, had dinner and came back out to see a puddle of brake fluid under it. The slave was leaking. Perfect. Maybe it was the slave all along? Disassembly of the old master didn't show anything terrible- no gunk, no rust, no swelled seals, no broken spring.

I'm in the process of wrestling the slave/pressure plate/ disk out. No fun.

So my BIG QUESTION is this: is it okay to bleed from the slave up, pushing fluid up through the slave, then the master and up to the reservoir? Or did that somehow cause the slave to fail?

Many people (like Ashcraft's excellent clutch replacement article in the Summer Vintage Views) recommend top down pressure. I could order one with a cap that fits, no problem. I do worry with the top down approach of blowing out the plastic tube from the reservoir down to the master, due to pressure from the top.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Eric in Vermont
