Need to clean the wires with soldering flux/paste. 30 watts soldering iron is more than enough. Also, make sure the soldering tip is clean. Use a wet spong and some fine sanding paper to get the tip ready. If all that fails than there is something wrong with your technique. (here I assume that you are soldering two pieces of 20 awg stranded wire). As a last measure, use a crimping wigglets that you can get at any home center. Cut leads at a different length (about 1 inch difference)(3 wires) so that final bundle will be small. Also use a heat shrinking tubing. Put that on before connecting leads and use a heat source to seal the whole thing.
