... the oxygen doesn't travel down the wire (try sucking on the end of an electrical cable to see how much air comes through). It is usually supplied either through a hole in the side of the sensor or through a hole in the top near where the wires exit.
Zirconia sensors (the most common type, and the type used on Saabs, I believe) can be damaged by contact with silicone compounds.
