Great lesson in avoiding getting stuck/towed! Shutoff unnecessary usage! If we all did this going about our daily lives we would use much less energy!
I believe the alternator from your 93 would work fine in the 97.
As you mentioned the big change was the voltage regulator style and part.
As far as changing the VR/brush pack on the newer stlye (95?? and up) there is a black plastic shroud that must come off first. If I recall, there are a couple small phillips-head screws on back (non pulley side) that hold it on.
If you decide to do it that way, next time the brushed need replacing (if ever) it must be noted that the car is 97 but the alt is 93!!
I am currently running the alternator from my spare 97 on my 94 Aero. The original alt failed at around 250k. I don't know if the brushes or alt had ever been changed prior, but the commutator was worn such that a even a new brush pack did nothing. I had it rebuilt locally with my supplied VR (30 bux)including installing a new comm (no mean feat) for around 125. It is now my on the shelf spare.
